The first saunas originated in Northern Europe around 2000 BCE. They were popularized in the 13th century in Finland with the creation of the word “Savu” a derivative of a term meaning “in smoke”. Today’s tradition of saunas can be seen in most of the world’s regions for their many benefits.
There are two main distinctions in modern saunas, traditional or Finnish saunas and infrared saunas. A conventional sauna will have temperatures ranging from 167°-194° F, whereas infrared saunas range in temperatures from 95°-113°F. An infrared sauna will promote additional muscle growth, fat loss, and lower cholesterol levels. Infrared saunas will also produce a smaller carbon footprint and will heat more safely.
